Schoolhouse Education was established as a local charity in 1970 to specifically work with young people aged 14-16 years who are unable or unwilling to successfully complete their education in mainstream school.
Our brief was to provide additional teaching and ancillary space to the rear of the existing terraced house within a Conservation Area, which constitutes the existing location of the school.
As well as providing increased area for teaching, the importance of a communal outside space for the school was identified and a recognition that the existing garden facilities were underused. We utilised the change in levels of the site, the ground level of rear of the house being half a storey lower than the front of the house, to provide low impact solutions.
