Spring Water Barn, Kent. Barn Conversion

Spring Water Barn is a contemporary barn conversion within the Kent High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

As barn conversion architect, David sought to celebrate the main elevation of the barn as a veiled screen.

The veil filters natural light into the interior while maintaining the appearance of a barn like form within the landscape with little fenestration. Within this veil are carefully positioned vignettes that align with the building’s central circulation paths. The barn was located within an enviable location, enjoying views of woodland, a meadow and the distant sounds of a heritage steam railway threading across the horizon and the vignettes frame these views.

"Working on agricultural buildings requires professionals who understand historical construction methods, have a record of successful project delivery and experience of dealing with design, build and planning challenges."

The contemporary barn conversion boasts an open plan arrangement organised around a core of cellular spaces. This maintains the scale of an agricultural building and allows for lofty spaces.

An air source heat pump provides sustainable energy.

The building has been carefully integrated into an overall long term strategy for the landscape.
